It depends on the TV, whether you will leave it on the stand or wall mount it…

Just throwing measurments at you won’t work. Once you decide on the TV, the manual will have the dimensions. If you want to build before you get the TV, go to the manufacturer’s site and see if you can download the manual. The measurements will be near the end… Along with the environmentals (like if you need to build-in an exhaust fan to get the heat out)…

For example, the Panasonic plasmas are pretty rectangular – but the Samsungs have a curved bottom… So… Which measurement do you want?

I’m gonna buy a flat screen TV. Is it really HD capable?

I dunno where else to ask this question. The TV in question is this:

LG LCD TV 42 42LG30R

And here’s a list of its features:

LG 42LG30R 42 LCD T.V

Overview

* 42 LCD Screen
* Resolution: 1366 x 768
* 15,000:1 contrast ratio
* WxHxD: 1033 x 743 x 294mm (With Stand)
* WxHxD: 1033 x 743 x 294mm (Without Stand)

Product Features

* 42 LCD Screen
* Invisible speaker
* clear voice
* Moving LED
* Simplink
* 2 x HDMI
* TV & PC compatible
* 15,000:1 contrast ratio
* 500cd/m2

Specifications

* Screen Size: 42
* Resolution: 1366 x 768
* Dimensions without stand (WxHxD): 1033 x 743 x 294mm
* Dimensions with stand (WxHxD): 1033 x 743 x 294mm

The info varies a little bit i think depending on the website i look into, but the question is, will this TV fully allow me to enjoy my PS3 games and BR movies in true HD? In the features there’s no mention to whether it outputs 480 720 or 1080p or i or whatever.

Is there any difference at all? should i get a full HD tv instead or this one will do just fine?

I’m getting this tomorrow (wednesday, november 26/2008), at USD $1265 tax included . I think it is pretty cheap, but i’d like to know what i’m buying into. I really dunno much about HD stuff , so i’d appreciate a little help, thanx a lot =)
EDIT:

Stephen M, i really appreciate your answer to my question, it is actually very accurate, and i’m reading a lot into it to find out more in the links you posted.

So, it only supports up to 720, that’s too bad. But then, would i notice the difference between 720 and 1080? I mean, i wouldn’t like to make a rushed buy if it ain’t gonna be a good (or “decent” at least) buy. I’m a huge fan of PS3 games and HD videos/ graphics, tho unfortunately i really don’t know much about it. Would they look bad on this LG tv set?

I live in Ecuador, South America. 32″ to 52″ LCD HD TV‘s are sold over the USD $1000 price range, being a 42″ about $2000 and so on price.

It would be the only chance to get a 42″ tv at that price, but again, if you or anyone thinks it ain’t worth it, then i’ll pass. thanx again =)

D_Icon is wrong (on several counts)

This set is capable of 720p only. I do not know where you are but in the US, $1265 for a 42 inch 720p set is not a good price.

Http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-definition_video

Quote “A common resolution used in HD Ready LCD TV panels is 1366 × 768[2] pixels instead of the ATSC Standard 1280 × 720 pixels. This is due to maximization of manufacturing yield and resolution of VGA, VRAM that comes with a 768 pixel format. Hence, LCD manufacturers adopt the 16:9 ratio compatible for the HD Ready 1080p standard.”

Without having a 720p and 1080p set side by side with the same signal, I doubt most people would be able to tell the difference. We have a 720 p set in out house along with a 1080p set and we love both of them. As far as the cost, with exchange rates and all, I’m simply not qualified to say if that is a good price or not. It would not be all that good here, but your situation is different. If you can afford it and like the set, go for it. Good luck!

HDTV for optimal gaming?

I mostly use my TV for gaming or watching movies, and some TV shows, I read some reviews and based on the price and the pros and cons I decided to go with a Samsung – 67″ 1080p Slim-Depth LED Engine DLP HDTV. My problem now is that Samsung also makes a 72 inch screen similar to this one that I would rather have, and I was wondering if the size would make the game look less than what it should because of the screen size being to big or if 67″ was too big for optimal gaming for that matter. Maybe you guys can help me out should I get the 67″ or 72″ (they are different series so I think they work differently)or maybe you could point me to a better HDTV, my budget is $2300 or less.

You have a great tv. The resolution in the new sets is so good that you don’t have to sit far away from them to save your eyes from strain. You will have great luck with your 67 inch for gaming. These DLP sets have not lasted a long time so buy the bigger one when this one dies. Read more at www.HDGURU.com and www.AVSFORUM.com..

Which one of these TVs is the better option?

I sit 6-7 feet away and am looking to get a 32″ (have a 26″ 720p now), and will use it for xbox 360, blu-rays, and netflix. I’m deciding between:

I like the thinness of the LED (since I’ve got a smalll room) and the better colours/contrast that LEDs should have, but on the other hand the lk450 has 1080p and a headphone jack (not absolutly necessary, but I would use it).
I have a 3D HDTV Question?

I’m going to be buying a 3D HDTV really soon, I have the option of either a LED Samsung or the Sony Bravia LED my question is which manufacture’s model has the best 2D to 3D conversion? As I work at Sears in the Electronics department and we do have a Samsung 3D Television on display but it’s a Plasma. Also for those that own a Sony 3D TV how is the 3D in general? As I have read reviews about ghosting…
Thanks to all that can help!
Thanks you both for your detailed answers and I am well aware that the 2D to 3D Conversion won’t be True 3D. In fact it’s quite obvious considering, that if the content isn’t made to be in 3D… It won’t be True 3D so to clear that up, I understand that much. On a side note I definitely appreciate the information provided. But perhaps I wasn’t clear in my question…? For those that own either 1: Samsung 3D HDTV or 2: Sony 3D HDTV, How is the 2D to 3D conversion? P.S.
Believe it or not some TV’s do have 3D conversion technology.

See this article from CNET:

http://news.cnet.com/3d-tv-faq/

That being said, 2D -> 3D conversion doesn’t seem to work to well at all.

From the CNET article:

Simulated 3D: The Blu-ray via Samsung’s 2D > 3D system

Our first experience with Samsung’s 2D-to-3D conversion system, which is designed to let you watch just about any source in 3D (except the TV’s own built-in streaming services, which include Vudu), made us somewhat nauseous.

Even with material as suitable as “Avatar” on Blu-ray, 2D-to-3D on the Samsung needs a lot more work. We used the default Movie mode and default 3D settings in our test, and watched about an hour total. At times we felt that twinge in the stomach again, and after watching we felt disoriented.

Slow scenes with little camera movement were the easiest to watch, and provided the most pleasing 3D effect, but once the action increased, so did our feeling of discomfort. … We paid more attention to the rolling and pitching in our stomachs than to the screen; we had no such issues watching the 2D version (or 3D in the theater, for that matter).

At times, the 3D effect was pronounced, such as when the camera took in the computer screens at the base, or when when Jake and Naytiri examine the skeleton in Chapter 17. We also appreciated the increased depth of field in some long shots, like the hallway in Chapter 3. At other times, the 3D effect was minor or essentially nonexistent, such as when the Jake wheels through the lab to see his avatar on the tank. We also noticed that sometimes the system would pick certain objects to push unnaturally into the foreground, like the edge of a desk in Chapter 4. This inconsistency became annoying, and we found ourselves yearning for the fixed perspective of 2D fairly quickly.

We also noticed that already fake-looking blue-screen effects were made more-so by the simulated 3D effect. On memorable moment came at the 25-minute mark, when the soldier exiting the chopper and walking in the foreground appeared completely divorced from the scene behind him, like a high-tech cardboard cutout.

We also saw some crosstalk, or ghostly outlines around objects, such as around Jake’s wheelchair in Chapter 24.

All told we are impressed, as before, that the 2D-to-3D conversion system on the Samsung works at all. But if you’re expecting it to come anywhere near the comfort level and “wow” factor of true 3D, you’ll be disappointed.

EDIT: I guess the short answer is neither. My advice would be go the store and try it out. Watch 5 – 10 minutes of “faked” 3D on each, and see if you care for either.

Best HDTV with Picture in Picture?

I’m about to purchase my first HDTV. Yes, I know I’m living in the dark ages, but I have a Sony Trinitron WEGA (“flat screen” tube), that hasn’t failed me in 7 years. I have quite a few fears in moving to HDTV, because I’ve heard a lot of horror stories of many new HDTVs braking down after only a few months of use (mainly backlight problems). It seems Plasma, LCD and LED technologies are way more fragile than old school tech. Also, one other thing that has kept me from buying an HDTV is the lack of models with Picture In Picture feature. My Sony Trinitron WEGA has PIP and I use it quite a lot, so if I’m “upgrading” my TV, it needs to have PiP. That’s a dealbreaker for me, because if not, I feel like I’d be downgrading.

Anyway, I’ve found that the only HDTVs with PiP are Vizio, Sony and Samsung. Just because of brand recognition and familiarity with the brand (and excellent experience with prior equipment), I was leaning towards Sony. But that was only until I found out that Sony’s PiP only works with the PC input in the main screen. So that’s not true PiP for me. Then, my second choice was Samsung, but it seems their PiP only supports analog TV input in the sub screen (ie. I can’t cycle through the other inputs in the sub screen). So again, that’s not full service PiP. Apparently, I’m only left with Vizio, which seems to have a full array of PiP uses. However, I’ve noticed an unusually high amount of bad online reviews for this brand, mainly the screen going dead or with black and white stripes within the first two years of use. It doesn’t sound too encouraging.

Are these the only PiP options the HDTV universe has to offer? Or are there any other alternatives out there? Should I cross my fingers and go with the Vizio, or should I just accept the fact that newer TVs don’t have the PiP features I’m used to, and go with a better brand? Any comments? Suggestions? Anything pointers are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just make it short and simple to you >
you own an world first class quality Trinitron WEGA TV. CRT TV rich in colour display / pure dark / black colour.smooth pictures with out motion blur. Well balance in contrast ratio – brightness.
None of any LCD TV even high end high prices closed to CRT such kind of smooth pictures and performance .
All LCD TV with motion blur , hi end models by quality brand less motion blur , LCD TV unable to display pure black colour.
Those up grade from CRT TV to LCD TV take somethings to ” accept it ” or totally disappointed .
I don’t think you can except such ” poor quality pictures ” if you use to Sony Trinitron !
Get an Samsung / Sony / Sharp high end LCD TV maybe okay , but take sometimes to ” accept it “.
Change to Samsung / LG / Sharp / Sony entry level models even mid end models . You will REGRET .
Get an local house buyer brand / budget brand low quality LCD TV ( Vizio is one of the budget brand )
beware of ” blood pressure “, could make it a little high . Unless you old TV is just an very normal low quality TV.
Plasma is PREFECT . About CRT quality. New Panasonic Plasma technology with out burn in / over heat issue . 60,000 hours life time as good as any LCD/LED. Lower power consumption. IS EXCELLENCE . Prices too ! Joint the smart for big screen HD TV >

http://www.plasmatvreviews.org.uk/articles/plasma-television-sales-showcased-record-growth/

http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/63288357.html?elr=KArks7PYDiaK7DUHPYDiaK7DUiacyKUnciatkEP7DhUr

if you looking screen size below 42 inc. LED TV ( LCD0LED BACK LIGHT ) is very close to Plasma performance . I should said , you will still HAPPY for it. But that only from Samsung / LG / Sony / Sharp LED TV. Not other brand. Those budget local house brand LED TV just LCD quality not up to real LED TV quality.
**********
if you want somethings compare to Sony Trinitron WEGA , only 2 option
check it out . Samsung / LG / Sony / Sharp LED TV , there should have PIP models.
The best still Panasonic Plasma. Prefect .
Other ? Very sure , simply regret believe me. Don’t take risk !

There are a number of HDTV (DVB-T) tuner cards available, and presumably some of them will plug into a Mac (I assume an x86 Mac?). However, you will need to get one that’s compatible with whichever version of MacOS you are running.

Once you have a tuner card and the software that comes with it, you can set it up much like a VCR and have it record programs in mpeg-2 format. These files can then be sent to your friends in the U.S., but be warned that the files will be HUGE – multiple gigabytes.

rob answers:

You have to open “display properties” and choose to extend your desktop onto that monitor.
Make sure you unplug it and plug it back in, and see if it recognizes it as a monitor (It’ll make a sound like you plugged in a usb device). If it makes three quick noises that are all low-pitched, it’s likely your hardware requires some kind of drivers that aren’t available. It’s possible that it’s your video card that needs drivers in order for the S-video-out to work.
Holdthe Windows key (between CTRL and ALT) and “Pause|Break”, and it should open your system properties.
In there, go to the Device manager (I believe in Win7, it’s on the left side near the top). Check for anything with an X or exclamation over it. Also, check in “Display Adapters” and see if your other monitor is listed there.
Hope this helps!

rob answers:

Well here’s your answer. Either will work. Basically what you are comparing is a tv that has the ability to display an HD signal from another source (like a PS3 or a digital cable box), and a set that can retrieve HD signals from the air with an antenna. (HD-ready monitor and an HD Television respectively). If you buy an HD-ready set at Wal-Mart it wil work just fine if you are using a PS3 on it as long as you use the right hook-ups from the back of the PS3 to the back of the tv. The proper wires are known as Component RCA cables.

rob answers:

You probably won’t be able to notice the difference between 720p and 1080p in that size range. However you will be stuck getting an LCD, so get one with the highest refresh rate possible, especially if you plan on getting one towards the larger end of that spectrum. 120 Hz is much better than 60 Hz when it comes to playing back movies, but such LCDs will still not be perfect in response time; for that, keep your old CRT or get a plasma.
Some good brands of LCD in that range include Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, LG, Toshiba, and Sharp.

I think that stations like CNN and the BBC are way too liberal for my taste. It caters to unrealistic ideals and it ignores half of the truth in each story. They are known for giving one side and not the other and for pandering to Muslims. Instead of discussing the facts they dwell on perceived hatred by the Conservatives, and instead of investigating the whole story, most often they have only been interested in how to bring the “racist” element alive in their news even if there’s nothing racist to be told. Example: The story in Texas about the employer who asked his employees to use easier names to pronounce for customer service calls… They jumped on it, and instead of looking at it from the perspective of customer ease, they attempted to make the business owner look bad for it calling him a racist, and when they had a guest reporter who was also Latino speak on it, the reporter said that was perfectly reasonable to ask of this employees.

Well lets start off by saying that that first answer you got shows that level of moronic ignorance out there in America today. They don’t question the Fox News viewers intelligence because they are Fox News watchers but rather that the viewer doesn’t follow in lock step with the point of view that they personally hold. This leads us into next question; it is not that the others are less “pro-American” as it may look, they are pushing an agenda/propaganda that they want you to believe instead. It make them upset when you think for yourself and don’t drink the koolaid they are passing out. We live in a global society and there is no way out of that, they just want to be crowned kings & worshiped as important people instead of just doing their job honestly. “Check every fact on every channel for your own good…read, watch, ask questions and never believe that anyone knows everything!” Good luck to you in life my friend!

It won’t let me change inputs at all and i tried to format my remote but that didn’t work either. What should i do? I‘m all out of ideas.

What type of tv are you using, every tv well anything made in past 10 years will have AV inputs. If yours is older then that I suggest you buy a newer one. But if it has it and your AV inputs are used by your direct tv box. By a switcher. That you can plug multiple devices into and by the press of a button it will switch to each device. You can get them pretty cheap. I got one for 5 dollars but I only use it for sound.

What is the your TVs make/model and what is the model of your theater system?
I think you need to pick one type of connection,for example for HDMI you would connect the PS3 to your theater system and then from your theater system to your TV using another HDMI cable.
Or you could connect your PS3 to the TV then from the TV to the theater system.It depends on your theater system and TV.

And does your TV just have one HD in port?
If so then you’ll need a switch like this

rob answers:

That sounds like the micro may need reset…unplug the TV for 5 minutes and see if it restores operation….

IF not, then we have a problem with the micro….

The doodle-lee-do tells you the micro can read the firmware and begin the startup process, since you don’t get that, it’s definitely the micro not being able to do it’s startup sequence…

Edit —

Well I HONESTLY haven’t had micros go bad on Any TV set…so I suspect something more along the line of a bad 3.3V supply killing the micro…that would be my first check…
Next would be the EEProm….those do go bad….
But the REAL question is, does Samsung supply that part or just the Board?

Because parts would be around $30
And boards would be around $300….

So I can only suggest getting it DIAGNOSED by a Samsung Authorized repair center near your town so you can see if the company can get the parts….and if not, you can then decide if it’s worth the cost of the board.

Diagnostics generally run $50 to $80…..

Power supply board for sure!

It will probably be cheaper to get this fixed. About $150…maybe more depending on model if you take the TV to a repair shop.

However…if you are secure enough to take the back off of the TV and remove the power supply board, you could take that to a repair shop or maybe Radio Shack and have them fix it for a lot, lot cheaper!

Up to you…Good luck!

rob answers:

Look at the specs on the back of the TV. What does it say it uses power wise. How many watts? Now look at the other one and see what it says. One is either the same or lower than the other in power consumption. To find savings subtract one from the other to get the watts-difference. Then figure out how many kilowatts an hour you use. Take watts difference/1000 which gives you kilowatts. The answer is in kilowatts per hour. Find out what you are paying your electric company per kilowatt hour, which can be found on your electric bill. Now multiply that times the answer you got earlier and you get how much you will save per hour to run the less powered TV. Oh and then multiply that by how many hours there are in a year 8 765.81277 hours.

Since you don’t have a HDTV tv, the only connections you can use are RCA cables & S Video. They are color coded to make it easy. Why do you have a HDTV set Top box ?
gaming consoles hdtv & reciver help/guide needed?

hi.
i’m an avid gamer,but a noob to the home theatre and hdtv side of it. I’ve got the following consoles:

5) xbox 360 – just bought.

now that i’ve got my new xbox, i’m looking for suggestions on the best tv and surround sound systems for the ultimate gaming and dvd-movie viewing. I have the upconversion cables for the ps2 and xbox.

I’ve done some reasearch, and i think i want a receiver for sourround sound that i can just plug everything into, but don’t know if i need dts or dolby. the outputs should go to the tv and speakers.

Any suggestions as far as makes and models would be greatly appreciated. I have no idea for the surround sound (thinking 6.1), but for the tv, i’m considering a 32″ Philips model# 32FD9954/17s Plasma for about $1100.

Ideally, i’d like a 42″, but want to keep the cost reasonable, as i’ll be getting a dvd player that can upscale as well (untill i buy my ps3).

rob answers:

Well first of all, if you look around for some sales, you can probably find a 42″ Westinghouse LCD for around $1100. They’re on sale at my local Fred Meyers for that much. This is an excellent screen (I have 2 of them) that displays 1080p and won’t disappoint. For the price, it’s by far the best bang for the buck. It would serve better than a 32″ anything I think; and I personally prefer LCD’s over plasmas anyway becuase the pixel size on plasmas is so large that it just irks me. But the reason I recommend this Westy TV is because it’s cheap for what you get… 1080p… Which means if you ever get the HD Drive for that 360 and start watching HD DVD’s, you’ll already have the right TV to take full advantage of it. Likewise when your PS3 shows up and you get some BluRay movies. If you have HD cable… Again you’ll be in the optimal position to take advantage of it.

Moving on.. If you want a decent surround sound setup, be prepared to spend at least as much as you will spend on the TV. Otherwise, if you can sacrifice quality, you can get a “home theatre in a box” or “HTIB” setup at Best Buy or somesuch. That will preclude any possibility of using your own speakers however; and you’ll have to run more wires back and forth. You really get what you pay for.

If you want to invest in a receiver, it can be daunting to find the right one. What you want to look for, primarily, is that it has enough inputs for whatever items you have, or plan to have. I believe Yamaha makes some receivers in the $300-$400 range that have a good mix of component, S-video, composite and optical inputs while cranking out 5.1 channel surround. If you spend a little more, you can get a receiver with HDMI inputs. The nice thing about a receiver is that you can plug in 6-10 different items, and have a grand total of ONE wire running to your TV; so long as the receiver you pick out, can convert any analog input to a component output.

Of course, you’ll also need speakers and good speakers cost $$$. Again, if you’re on a budget, you may be better off with a HTIB. However, a good receiver and speakers will outlast and outperform any HTIB by a million times.

With your list of video game consoles, you SHOULD be able to hook them all up to almost any receiver, as long as you have different cable types. I.e. The Dreamcast and N64 are probably composites; you might have components for the Xbox and PS2; and who knows what for the 360.

How do I set my new Samsung LN40B640 LCD HDTV to display at 1080P and 120hz?

I just bought a new Samsung LN40B640 HDTV and can’t figure out how to change the setting to get the best possible picture. When I hit the info button, it shows that my display is 1080i and 60hz but I want it to be at 1080P and 120hz. I can’t find anything in the manual or online about this. I have a Comcast Cable box with component video cords running to the TV (Comcast didn’t have any sets with HDMI outputs).

First of all, HD cable or satellite can not do full 1080p hi def, even with an HDMI cable. The only things that can push ypur TV to that are Blu-ray discs, and HD game consoles WITH the use of an HDMI cable as most TV’s can not do 1080p through component cables (the green, red, and blue video cables).

As for your 120Hz,the station broadcasting can only support 60Hz (30 fps).

Problem with black box showing up on some channels of Samsung HDTV??

Hi, I have a 2 year old Samsung HD TV and I’m having a weird problem that isn’t addressed in the user manual. On some of the channels after about 30 seconds a big black box appears right in the middle of the screen. I have comcast cable but this doesn’t happen on any TV in the house but mine. (Mine is the only HD one though?) And its not on all of the channels, just some. It just started happening and is getting worse.

Has anyone had a similar problem, and is it the cable or my TV?? How could I fix this?? It seems like its my TV since it doesnt happen on any other TV, but then again it seems like its not because it doesn’t happen on all of the channels!!

Hmm, I’m not sure but have you checked to see if closed captionoing is turned on on your TV? Closed captioning can be a blank black box. Make sure Closed captioning is turned off on ypur set.

I’m having trouble connecting my Macbook Pro to my Samsung LCD HDTV?

I got the necessary cables for both picture and sound display. I can connect it, and it shows my desktop background, but thats it. It won’t show the mouse, the dock, the menus, or anything on the desktop. I can play a song through the speakers, but that is it.

I tried to adjust the resolution, but it won’t work, no matter how big or small I make it. I looked at the TV manual, but it says that the correct resolution is 1360 x 780, which my Macbook Pro doesn’t have.

How can I make it so I can use the TV as a monitor??
Actually, this is the first problem I have encountered.. And there is nothing wrong on the Macbook’s side of things, its the Samsung that won’t properly display.

Your HD set was designed to receive either 720 or 1080 line of information. Standard TV channels only provide 480, so you set has to upconvert 480 into either 720 or 1080. Thus generating distortion (noise) making you picture look less than what you expected. Not much you can do to correct the issue. If you are using the 622 receiver, you can lower the resolution in HD setup to 480 to make non HD signals look better (i guessing on this as i have not tried it). But you would have to make that change everytime you switched for HD to SD and back to HD.

Your HDMI cable is the right way to go and is not an issue.
